Granite, Forest & History: Serra de Sintra Day Hike

Tomorrow is one of the few sunny days in the next 2 weeks!
Join us for a full-day hike through one of the most magical landscapes around Lisbon: the Serra de Sintra. This loop takes us through deep forest, granite ridges, and centuries of history, including the extraordinary 16th-century Convento dos Capuchos, built directly into the rock. Expect wild scenery, quiet trails, and sweeping views — a true escape just outside the city. The hike is about 10.5 km with ~400 m elevation gain, taking around 3.5 hours of walking, plus time to enjoy the surroundings.

Logistics

• Meet at Rossio station (Lisbon)
• 10:01 train to Sintra (train 18831)
• 10:40 arrival in Sintra
• Shared Uber to Colares (start of the hike)
• Finish mid-afternoon
• Return to Lisbon by train

Gear:

• Water, lunch, snacks
• Hiking shoes or good sneakers
• Layers and warm clothes
• Rain or wind coat

The weather should be cool and fresh (~11–13°C), perfect for hiking — bring layers as Sintra can be windy. If anyone has a car and can help with transport, let us know.
If rain changes the plan, we’ll switch to exploring one of Sintra’s iconic castles instead.
