The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Details
We'll discuss Goethe's first novel published in 1774, part of the 'Sturm und Drang' movement. It tells the tale of an unhappy, passionate young man hopelessly in love with the wife of a friend. Following the book's publishing, a fashion craze took off - young men throughout Europe started to dress like Werther. Also, the fate of the book's protagonist reportedly inspired many copycat suicides.
