Implement creative writing techniques in your own writing by learning from the masters of the craft.

Inspired by Francine Prose’s book Reading Like a Writer: a Guide for People Who Love Books and Want to Write Them, in this writing workshop we will read several literary texts closely in order to learn how the author communicates information to the reader — not just plot but tone, perspective, and recurring themes. In each class we will look at one of the topics that Prose presents in her book: words, sentences, paragraphs, narration, character, dialogue, details, and gestures. By analyzing these techniques in literary texts, we will learn to use them in our own work, so that the texts we write come closer to the texts we envision writing. In addition, we will read and give feedback on each other’s writing. The intention is to work on one short story or narrative essay of about ten pages. The workshop will be taught in English but I will try to have the texts available in Spanish when possible.
