Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer
Four women—a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor—set out into Area X, a coastal wilderness region abandoned by humanity and reclaimed by a surreal, transforming nature. The eleven previous expeditions ended in mysterious suicides, fatal cancers, and horrific mental collapse. Tasked with mapping the terrain, recording their observations, and avoiding contamination, the team quickly discovers that Area X obeys its own uncanny laws, where the boundary between human identity and the natural world begins to dissolve.
