Being affected and exposed daily to these adult concerns, Francie develops a wisdom and wit beyond her years. Talented and smart, she commutes daily to New York City where she works as a reader for a newspaper. Francie still dreams of attending high school and, eventually, college. It is 1917 and the US is on the brink of war...

This book is based on the life of Betty Smith (1896-1972), her family and the Brooklyn neighborhood, and her personal struggle to receive an education.
