Elephant 🐘 Butte - from Alderfer Three Sisters EAST Trailhead

The West TH is closed for trailhead improvements so let’s head up from the East TH to Elephant Butte for some awesome views. Then on the trip back to the trailhead, we will stop by the Brothers Overlook…always a nice spot. 😎

Difficulty: about 8 miles with about 1,800 to 1,900 feet elevation gain. This is a self-made trail so distance and elevation gain are estimated.

We hike as a group and hike at an average moving pace of about 2.5 to 3mph. Although the group may split up due to different hiking paces, everyone is expected to wait at all intersections & periodically otherwise so that we can regroup and so no one is left behind for safety purposes. We will plan to take a break at Elephant Butte & we will stop along the way as needed.

NOTE THAT WE ARE MEETING AT THE EAST TRAILHEAD IN ALDERFER THREE SISTERS PARK.

HIKE DESCRIPTION: Elephant Butte is a nice little Jefferson County peak that lies outside the western side of Alderfer Three Sisters Park. This small mountain dishes up a lot of bang for the buck. It’s a neat, rocky peak rising out of the flats of Elephant Park and the views from the summit of the Evans Group (including Rosalie, Epaulet, Evans and Spalding) are divine. After a short break at Elephant Butte, we will head back and stop by the Bother's Overlook for another great view. DOGS ALLOWED IF FOLLOW PARK RULES: Allowed on a leash. Please be sure your dog is well behaved and can handle the length of the walk. Dog owners must clean up pet excrement, per Jefferson County Open Space Regulations (https://www.jeffco.us/DocumentCenter/View/8982).

We wait 5 minutes for late arrivals…but no longer as that is inconsiderate to those arriving timely. So please allow extra time to get to the trailhead.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING: Water, snacks, layers of clothing, good hiking shoes/boots, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, gloves, hiking poles (if you find them helpful), and anything else you deem essential. PLEASE ALSO BRING MICROSPIKES IN CASE WE NEED THEM.
