Genre-Crossing Mix of Jazz, Blues, and More

Pianist (and Back Room proprietor) Sam Rudin is joined for this show by drummer Jeremy Steinkoler (known to Meetup regulars for his appearances with Erika Oba's trio and also Jean Fineberg & JAZZphoria), bassist Sam Bevan, and special guest, Grammy-winning violinist Mads Tolling. Sam Rudin's keyboard style has been described as one that "blithely embraces jazz and blues, barrelhouse, boogie-woogie, and be-bop." Of his fellow bandmates for this show, Sam Rudin writes, "By mutual consent, their adventures stay within conventional boundaries of harmony and rhythm. But that still leaves a lot of room for exploring the exciting world of 'Hey, what's that over there!?'" ... So I guess the message to listeners is: Be ready for any (and every) thing! :)

EVENT COST: Tickets are about $28 per person online (or, if the show doesn't sell out in advance, you can buy a ticket at the door for $25 with either cash or Venmo). I also welcome $1.00 donations to defray the hefty fee that Meetup charges me as lead organizer of the Live Jazz (& Blues) Group.

SEATING: General admission, mainly on couches, in a casual, pleasantly funky, coffeehouse-type setting

WHEN/WHERE TO MEET: Unless joining me for the optional pre-show dinner, meet me out front of the Back Room by 7:00 p.m., so we can get seats together. (The show is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. and will likely consist of two sets, ending at about 9:30 p.m.) If we miss each other there, look for each other in the seating area.

PARKING/TRANSIT: Parking is easier to find as you get away from Shattuck OR as you go north of University. There is also a paid garage a few blocks away, but folks typically find free parking on side streets or main streets. http://backroommusic.com/transportation-parking/

LOCATION: The Back Room is located just off University, about a block from MLK (and Trader Joe's), on AC Transit bus routes, and less than a half-mile from the downtown Berkeley BART station.
