Afro-Caribbean vocalist and bandleader Christelle Durandy, whom Meetup members will recognize from her singing with the Pacific Mambo Orchestra and her guest appearances with John Santos' band, makes her Jazzschool debut with ¡LAS que escribieron! — “The Women Who Wrote!” — a program celebrating the unsung women songwriters and composers behind some of the most beloved Latin American traditional and popular songs. Durandy dives deep with each arrangement, bringing a modern jazz approach inspired by each composition’s lyrics, melody, and sense of groove. For this concert, Christelle is joined by:

Tammy L. Hall, piano
Julio de la Cruz, acoustic bass
Shawn Myers, drums

A concert featuring Christelle at a different venue a few years ago sold out in advance - so I wouldn't be surprised if this event does the same!

EVENT COST: Concert tickets are about $26 per person. Also, I welcome $1.00 donations from Meetup RSVPers if they haven't contributed recently to offsetting the hefty fees that Meetup charges me as lead organizer.

TICKETS: Buy your own tickets for this general-admission concert at the following link:

WHEN/WHERE TO MEET: Meet inside the performance area of the jazz school's DOWNSTAIRS location at 2087 Addison by 7:30 p.m., so we can aim to get decent seats together. (The concert goes from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.)

HOW TO FIND ME: I'm WF, about 5 feet tall, with short salt-and-pepper hair and glasses. (See my photo with my Meetup profile.) I'll send my cellphone number to RSVPers prior to the event. If I'm missing anyone when I get seated, I'll post a Comment on the Meetup Event Page with my location.

TRANSPORTATION/PARKING: The venue is less than a half-block from the downtown Berkeley BART station, as well as several AC Transit bus lines on Shattuck and University. There's a paid garage in the same block as the jazz school, or you can typically find free street parking as you get away from Shattuck or go north of University.
