Beginners' Bird Talk and Walk
Details
Would you like to learn more about native UK birds? To be able to identify some of the most common species by sight and/or sound? If so, you might like to join our first beginners’ bird talk and walk.
We will start on the external terrace at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral café, overlooking St James Gardens (an old cemetery), where we will have a 45-minute guided chat about the species we hope to see. This will include photographs and sound recordings of each species, so that when we go into the gardens we will be able to use our eyes AND ears to locate them.
Books, websites and other resources will also be recommended, for those who are inspired to learn more.
Then we will spend 30-45 minutes in the gardens, combining strolling with standing and waiting (because the birds can be a bit shy!). We will compile a list of the species we see/hear and compare it with the one compiled during a visit to the site in February.
The emphasis is on enjoyment as well as learning about the birds that live in the city.
Important information
Please wear appropriate clothing (warm layers, including waterproofs) and footwear. And if you have a pair of binoculars, please bring them along, although this site is a small one, so the birds should be visible to the naked eye.
There is a quite steep incline in/out of the gardens at one end and steps at the other; therefore, unfortunately the walk is not suitable for people with mobility issues.
Note that any physical activity can involve the risk of falling or other injury. We will be looking up and around us to see the birds while we are walking, but we also need to maintain awareness of the possibly uneven ground under our feet at all times.
Please note that the host(s) take no responsibility for the safety of any of the attendees – you are responsible for your own health and safety.
If at any time during the walk you need to leave for any reason, please let the host(s) know.
Finally, if the weather forecast is bad – snow, ice, strong winds or heavy rain – then the walk will be cancelled, for everyone’s safety and also because, in some of these conditions, the birds will not be out and about, either. For this reason, we ask you to please check Meetup before you set out on the day.
