What is Conciousness?

Details

Consciousness - a term that has gained more and more recognition amongst scientists and spirituality. Yet are we even sure of what we are discussing?

Science wishes to attach consciousness to mechanical devices and technology. Will AI develop a conscious state? Simulation theory believes we have been imbibed consciousness as some form of technological program or some such that means nothing actually exists, there is no physical reality but rather we are walking around as data pods on a glass computer screen, simply an interface to the other being.

But before we start proposing another creation theory based upon something we aren't even really sure what we are referring to, lets actually work out what consciousness is and make for a term that can be agreed upon in what it is in the shared physical construct.

A 2 hundred year old dictionary describes it as the state of being mentally awake to one's surroundings - L. conscire - to be aware.

English philosopher John Locke described it as 'the perception of what passes in a man's own mind'

Yet this doesn't really give us much. How is it that scientists are considering algorithmic consciousness to technology, robots, machines. Simply giving robots and computers a set of instructions doesn't mean they are aware?

So lets discuss.
