Details
The Aerospace Cancer Museum of Education & CleanUpRocketdyne.org is commemorating the Santa Susana Field Laboratory's Sodium Reactor Experiment's 50th Anniversay.
On July 13, 1959, 13 out of 43 Radioactive Fuel Rods in the Sodium Reactor Experiment reached melting point releasing a large amount of radioactive gas into the atmosphere. The meltdown released 240 times the radiation released during the Three Mile Island incident making it the worse nuclear accident in American history. And it happened right here -- in San Fernando Valley.
The true magnitude was kept from the public and the workers for decades. Today, environmental controversy over cleanup continues. Special guests include former workers, specialists on nuclear policy and regulatory agencies
