Mishe Mokwa - Tri Peaks
Details
Mishe Mokwa is one of the most beautiful trails in the Santa Monica Mountains. The variety of scenery is really what makes this hike so spectacular. It seems that nearly every half mile along the way there is a different formation, ecosystem, landmark or other point of interest to keep everyone in the group thoroughly engaged.
Highlights include the spectacular Echo Cliffs where rock climbers ascend shear cliffs, a house sized boulder delicately balanced on a small rock beneath, a giant split rock where we can walk between the sheer walls, stunning giant sandstone formations, and breathtaking views from the top of Sandstone Peak (the highest peak in Santa Monica Mountains) and Inspiration point.
The side trail to Tri Peaks will offer an additional mile of rugged (but not too steep) hiking. We'll explore around the rocks and caves (nothing heavy-duty) and enjoy the view. This will bring the hike to a respectable 7 miles. Net elevation gain is about 1400 ft.
The address above is approximate. Check out the Google links. Trailhead and parking lot is on the north side of Yerba Buena Rd, 4.5 miles west of Mulholland or 6.4 miles north of PCH (1 mile past Circle X park office). Yerba Buena is very curvey so drive carfefully.
Exit and turn south at CA-23 (Westlake Blvd)
Continue to follow CA-23 south 7.2 mi (It becomes Mulholland Hwy along the way)
Turn right and continue west on Mulholland Hwy 0.4 mi (If you continue south on 23 you will end up on Decker Cyn)
Turn right at Little Sycamore Canyon Rd 1.9 mi
Slight left at Yerba Buena Rd 2.7 mi
Sandstone Peak Trailhead will be on right (There is a sign there. There are a couple turnouts along the way. If you are on a turnout without the sign you are in the wrong place)
