A hidden staircase, the longest public staircase in Los Angeles, drops 24 stories into the middle of lush Rustic Canyon. Our group is familiar with the Murphy Ranch - the ruins from an old Nazi sympathizers compound built in 1930’s, but this staircase remains untried.
There are actually two staircases with over 500 steps -- each! We'll use the longest one to climb our way out of Rustic Canyon toward the end of our loop.
At the beginning of the hike we'll descend into Rustic Canyon using an old paved road that is now an overgrown single track trail. Of course the star of our hike will be the staircase. We'll keep it at a somewhat touristy pace with time to explore the ruins and artifacts. Bring a camera.
The hike will only be about 4 miles but with almost 1,000 feet total elevation gain (400 ft net). No beginners

From Sunset Boulevard, 3 miles west of the 405, turn north at the light onto Capri Drive. After 1/3 mile continue through the traffic circle, remaining on Capri Drive for another 1/3 mile until it comes to and end at Casale Road. Sullivan Ridge Fire road begins to the left but do not turn left on Casale Rd. Find street parking to the right or on an adjacent roads. After you park, walk to the end of Casale Rd. This is where we will meet and check in.
You will be parking in a residential neighborhood with parking restrictions. Pay attention to signs. If you arrive by 8:30 you may find parking on Casale Rd. Otherwise don't be surprised if you have to park 1/4 - 1/2 mile away. Study the map. Be on time.
