The gorge I am referring to is the V-gorge of Hondo Canyon. Those who have hiked with me on this shady segment of the Backbone Trail have seen it from a lookout point. See picture on right.

This trip, instead of the typical hike to Fossil Ridge, Saddle Peak etc., after about 1/3 of the way up we'll descend into the canyon and explore the gorge.

Estimated stats: 5 miles, 700' elevation gain. While not a strenuous hike, some of it is exploratory and may require some hiking through scrub

After the hike we'll meet up at Pat's Topanga Grill in Topanga Canyon. (BYOB)

Other highlights of this hike includes staggering views of pink colored sedimentary rock, the Sespe Formations, beautifully shaded live oak, streams and a sloping green meadow.

Meet at backbone trailhead on south side of Old Topanga Road, 1/4 mile west of Topanga Canyon. Park on south side of street

Since a portion of this hike is exploratory wear good hiking shoes/boots, bring plenty of water, long pants recommended.
