First Hike in Puente Hills Preserve - Sycamore Canyon, Hellman Park & Beyond

The Puente Hills Preserve consists of rugged topography, steep hillsides and deep canyons.

For our first time visit we'll start at Sycamore Canyon. The canyon harbors some fine riparian habitat overlooked by some rather dramatic, eroded cliffs. There are several large and twisted specimens of California sycamore trees to admire, as well as willows, cottonwoods, and toyons.

After a side trip to Dark Canyon we'll climb out of Sycamore Canyon and into Hellman Wilderness Park, perched on a south slope of the Puente Hills overlooking the city of Whittier. It offers a quick passage via steep trail to some of the more airy vantage points.

We'll hike for about 8-9 miles with[masked] ft total ascent. See trail map of planned hike here: http://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/21020212/

How long do you expect the hike to take (i.e. should we pack a lunch)? Is it safe to assume dogs are welcomed? :)

    Thanks!
