This hike will begin at San Vicente Mountain Park (the old NIKE missile base) with a southern descent down Westridge Fire Road straddling the ridgeline between Sullivan and Mandeville Canyons with spectacular city and ocean views.
Then the hike loops north and goes up the forested canyon floor of Sullivan Canyon and climbs the chaparral covered slopes to Sullivan Ridge.
The hike up Sullivan Canyon parallels a seasonal creek through a shady canyon. Alive with the singing of birds, this hike sounds and feels like an aviary housed within huge stands of sycamore, oak, and willow trees. The yuccas stand as sentries at the top of the canyon.
Hike is somewhat strenuous at 10.5 miles and 1500 feet elevation gain.
