Newton Canyon - Beginners OK
Details
This is an enjoyable and relatively easy hike along Newton Canyon segment of the backbone trail. Most of the trail is shaded by small oak trees. The trail slowly drops down into Newton Canyon, then climbs back up to meet Latigo Canyon, this hike's turn-around point. Along the way we catch a glimpse of the Malibu Hills Vineyards -- you will think we are in Tuscany.
Round trip is 5 miles out and back with 500' elevation gain.
Attention Beginners: Bring 1- 2 Qts water, snack, and hiking shoes or sturdy tennis shoes. Know your limitations
(Optionally, depending on the group, for additional mileage and elevation gain, we will continue past this point on the Backbone Trail to the Castro Crest Motorway, adding an additional 3 miles to the hike.)
Directions
From the Ventura Freeway 101, go south on Kanan Road about 7.8 miles to just before the "third tunnel" (T1). The parking lot is on the right (west side of what is now Kanan-Dume Road) and easy to spot.
From Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, go north on Kanan Dume Road about 4.3 miles, just through the "first tunnel," and make a left turn into the parking lot on the west side of Kanan Dume.
