Literally step out of the Valley and into another world.

This 6-mile (extendable to 8 miles depending on group) loop hike begins in Devils Canyon near the north end of Topanga Canyon Blvd. Devils Canyon with its spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. Live Oak and Willow trees fill the canyon and sandstone geology of the wildest kind is found. There are many shallow stream crossings along the way

After a couple miles we will then bear east and ascend Ybarra Canyon. The streamside vegetation changes here and the trail passes through a densely shaded oak savanna occassionally interrupted by small grassy meadows. The top of the canyon empties onto Michael D. Antonovich Regional Park at Joughin Ranch (https://lamountains.com/parks.asp?parkid=36) under Oat Mountain where we will take our snack break.

We complete our loop by heading south across Chatsworth's Deer Lake Highlands along a network of equestrian trails. It is here we can optionally extend the hike.

Directions: Take the 101 or 118 to Topanga Canyon Blvd. Head north to the end of street and make a left on Poema Place for about 50-100 yards and park on street. From West LA take the 405 North to the 118 West.

There will probably be some poison oak in the canyon so wear long pants (long sleeves is also a good idea) and stay on trail. Bring shoes you don't mind getting wet.
