The hike down Sullivan Canyon parallels a seasonal creek through a shady canyon. Alive with the singing of birds, this hike sounds and feels like an aviary housed within huge stands of sycamore, oak, and willow trees. And so we shall take advantage of the shadiness and make this the last segment of the hike.
Our hike will begin on a horse trail that take's us to a single track trail paralleling the east side of Sullivan Ridge Fire Road. Soon after the trail joins the fire road we will diverge onto a shady contour trail on the west side of the ridge above Rustic Canyon. We will re-emerge back on the ridge near the vehicle entrance to Camp Josepho where we will continue north.
A little ahead, atop the fireroad, a prominent lone-standing live oak along makes a natural spot for a shady snack break. At this point we will decide if we want to do the big loop (11 miles and more elevation gain) or the small loop (8 miles) depending on weather.
A seasonal creek flows through the shady forested canyon.....
Hike will be 8-11? miles with some hefty elevation gain/loss
Post-hike lunch will be at Brentwood Country Mart at[masked]th St (Corner of San Vicente) http://brentwoodcountrymart.com/
Its patio seating and as far as I can tell, you can bring your own beverage. The times I have been there no one was watching. I am going to attempt it.
