Our hike will begin in Santa Ynez Canyon featuring chilly mountain pools, several beautiful waterfalls, and slim sandstone cliffs set in a cool oasis of lush oak and sycamore forests. There are several stream crossings. We will skip the waterfall trail and climb out of Santa Ynez Canyon to Eagle Springs fireroad -- this part will get your heart pumping. From here its just a couple mile to our picnic spot.
Eagle Rock, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park, will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. Here we will spend enough time to enjoy our snack/lunch and explore this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves.
We'll depart Eagle Rock and head over to the Hub Junction and hike toward the Pacific Ocean along Temescal Ridge Fireroad. Temescal Ridge is covered in low grasses and sagebrush that enable sweeping views. To the south, there is a lovely perspective of Santa Monica Bay and the sprawling civilization of Los Angeles. To the east, over the ridges of the Santa Monica Mountains, rise the loftier San Gabriel Mountains. We'll then descend down along Trailer Canyon to Michael Lane with a short walk through the neighborhood back to the cars
Hike is 9.5 miles with 1,400 feet elevation gain. Bring plenty of water and a sack lunch. Some vino to share would be a nice touch.
