Frequently AskedQuestions

What books can I bring? Is this for fiction only? What about books inother languages?

All fiction books are welcome, in any language, however the majority of books at the moment are in English and a smaller collection in Mandarin, with only a few in other languages. We've just started, after all! Help us to build the collection.

For non-fiction, books on theory and classic such as Art of War or Wealth of Nations or Das Capital, culture and language textbooks are always welcome. Out of date textbooks and commercial materials (catalogs, magazines etc) should be recycled instead.

We want to encourage people to share those books that had an impact on their lives. Books with a great story. Inspiring lessons. Important knowledge and ideas. Ask yourself if you would recommend this book to your friend. If the answer is yes, then please bring it. We realize this might mean parting with a treasured possession, but really what good is it doing sitting on the shelf? Let somebody else benefit from it the way you did and share with them your message in a card we'll provide you to go into the book. Is this getting too complicated? Just use your best judgement.

How many books can I swap or donate each time? Can I give you all of my old books? I am leaving Shanghai/ I am switching to e-reading!

Swap at a ratio of two of yours for one from the collection, or donate as many as you want, but if you have larger quantities than you can carry, let us know in advance by email or wechat and we'll see if there is some way to handle it.

How does it work? Do I have to bring books? Do I have to buy books?

If you are not sure what it is all about, just come and see us. No obligation to swap, donate or buy.You can just sit with everyone and have a cup of coffee if you want.

We recommend that you bring a few books anyway, for potential swaps or donation to the collection. If you want to swap, you put in two books and can take any one book from the collection.

If you don’t want to swap, or if you want to take home more books, browse the collection and take home any books you like for prices from 5 to 40 RMB each. 50% goes to our charity partner. The rest of the money will be used to continue the initiative, and any money left over will go towards other social impact activities supported by LOHAUS.

Why a book reuse event?

LOHAUS believes in sustainable urban living, which involves both reusing and the sharing economy. Many of us have old books we've read (or not) that do nothing more than sit ona shelf. Why not let others read them, and get other books to read at the sametime? Recycle those old books. At the same time, by being social, recommending books and getting recommendations from others, your mind is opened to a worldof new possibilities.
