Level: Moderate (2B) 9 mi, 1800 ft gain
Meet: Enter Huddart County Park (1100 Kings Mountain Rd, Woodside, CA 94062). Pay the $6 (day) parking fee. Then drive to the Zwierlein Picnic Area (GPS coordinates for parking: 37.442054, -122.291369). After paying, drive forward, make your second right, proceed to the picnic area located on the right, just past a tan-brick restroom and park. This is our meeting place.
Description: Our hike is a counter-clockwise loop. This hike is primarily in the shaded, second-growth forest consisting of Redwoods as well as other trees. From the Crystal Springs Trail we will make our way to the Phleger Estate Park where using Richards Rd, we will proceed to Miramontes Trail. At approximately 2 miles, we will turn right on the Raymundo Trail descending down to a creek that runs near the Phelger Estate house located up the hill to the right and out of view. We will follow the creek, enjoying the Redwood trees, regaining altitude and rejoin the Miramontes Trail. From then it's mostly up, up to our highest point near Kings Mountain and Skyline Blvd. We will be about 5 miles into our hike and this will be our lunch spot. From there, we will begin losing altitude, reenter Huddart Park and return to our starting point using the Crystal Springs Trail.
Natural History: Huddart Park history is the place to go to learn more about the park since 1840. The Ohlone Indians were here before then. For Phleger Estate see Phleger Estate histroy. Poison oak, ticks and rattlesnakes make their homes in the park, so learn to identify them and steer clear of them.
Wear/bring: sturdy hiking boots/shoes, 2L water, layered clothing, snacks, lunch, sun protection, basic first aid kit, completed medical form, hiking poles (optional).
