Level: Moderate (2B) 7.5 mi, 1200 ft gain
Meet: Enter Butano State Park, 1500 Cloverdale Rd. Pay the $10 (day) parking fee. After paying, drive forward about 1/4 mile and park in the lot on the right, next to the outhouses. Our meeting places is at the picnic tables next to the lot.
Description: Our hike is a counter-clockwise loop where we will be able to see how the park has recovered after the fire five years ago. This hike is primarily in the shaded, second-growth forest consisting primarily of Redwoods and Douglas Fir. We will hike east, further into the park, along the Six Bridges Trail for about 0.5 mi. Then, we gain altitude following the Olmo Fire Rd in the southern direction, connecting to the Goat Hill Trail where we will pass through a young Douglas Fir forest, and finally reconnect to the Olmo Fire Rd, having covered a total of 1.5 mi. Taking the road east for about 1.8 mi we will connect to the Doe Ridge Trail. At this junction, we are at the highest point of this hike. We will then follow the Doe Ridge Trail back in a western direction until at about 5 mi into the hike where we will connect with the Goat Hill Trail. From there, following Goat Hill and other trails we lose altitude, finally reaching Butano Creek Rd and the Mill Ox Trail at the 6 mi mark. Our lunch spot is at a picnic table in the Redwoods next to Little Butano Creek. After lunch, we will gain altitude heading north along the Mill Ox Trail, then head west along the Jackson Flat Trail. At about 7 mi, we will stop by the Visitor Center to look at the nature exhibits, and then take the Six Bridges Trail back to the parking lot for a total hike of about 7.5 mi.
Natural History: Butano State Park Info - see Brochures is the place to go to learn more about the park. There you can find Park Brochure where you can learn about the park history including a little about the native Indians.
