Black Mountain Hiking Section - Long Ridge Open Space Preserve Hike
Details
Level: Moderate (2A) Approximately 6.7 mi, 650 ft gain
Meet: Peters Creek Trailhead Roadside Parking on the west side of Skyline Blvd. Additional parking is available across Skyline Blvd at the Grizzly Flat Trailhead, in Upper Stevens Creek County Park. Parking is free.
Description: We will meet at the roadside parking for Long Ridge Open Space Preserve, about 3.6 miles north of the intersection of Skyline Blvd and Highway 9 and 3.3 miles south of Skyline Blvd / Page Mill Rd. We will hike along Peters Creek Trail and then hike up to Long Ridge Trail. Long Ridge Trail should provide nice views out to the coastside. We will proceed along Hickory Oaks Trail to a circumnavigation of Turtle Rock before rejoining Peters Creek Trail for our hike back to the trailhead.
We will hike at a moderate pace with a few stops to enjoy the surroundings. Expect lots of exposure on this hike along with sections that are canopy covered.
There is no water, nor bathrooms, so be sure to stop along the way if these are needed before the hike.
Possible hazards include ticks, yellowjackets/wasps, poison oak, rattlesnakes, uneven terrain, and bicycles.
Please see the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space web site for more complete information on the preserves where we will be hiking and on the many other preserves they operate: https://www.openspace.org/
Adverse weather or trail conditions may shorten or cancel the hike. We practice "leave no trace" and carry out everything we carry in.
Cold drinks and light snacks after the hike (optional).
This is a back country hike. Please complete your medical form and carry with you (hikers will be asked to confirm this with the leader)
Wear/bring: at least 1L water, lunch and something to sit on, completed Medical Form, sun protection, sturdy shoes / boots, layered clothing, poles if you use them.
