AI Data Centers: Threats and Advocacy Opportunities
Details
What is happening?
San Jose is planning on building AI data centers near Alviso. The City proceeded with these plans without directly notifying nearby residents or involving them in the planning process.
San Jose plans to build a large power line running through north San Jose, called the Power The South Bay Project, to supply electricity for those future AI data centers and advanced manufacturing buildings. San Jose estimates that its plans for data centers in north and south San Jose would triple the City’s energy demand.
What has happened already?
On November 18, 2025, the San Jose City Council selected the developer Prologis to develop the 159 acres of open space north of Highway 237, on both sides of Zanker Road. Prologis is preparing data center plans, which will undergo environmental review and require a vote by the City Council.
