Talk title: Accessibility - better apps for the (dis)abled

In this presentation we will learn what exactly is accessibility and try to break the myth of it only being related to disabilities.

We'll cover:

  • Common myths versus the true nature of accessibility. All users are disabled to some extent (long term, temporarily, situationally).
  • Inclusivity and future proofing. Better for disabled people means better for everyone but also better for unknown technologies.
  • Common mistakes. Personal preferences, common biases, misunderstanding data and methods of testing.
  • How to tackle accessibility. Content, design, technical solutions and mindset.
  • Battlefield stories. Examples of common issues, what went wrong and how it was fixed.

Our Speakers:

Fraser Hart (Senior Manager - Web Development at NewDay)

Fraser started out as a junior web developer slicing Photoshop files into HTML tables after dropping out of university over 20 years ago and has seen every evolution, iteration and trend on the web since. Focussing primarily on core front end technologies in the last 7 years, Fraser has worked in agencies, start-ups and international bank settings. Currently Senior Manager of Web Development at NewDay, heading up front end development and front end teams.
