Tech Talk: Cloud Dev Environments on Bare Metal: Building a NixOS Appliance for Coder
Speaker: Adèle Devantoy (Coder)
Abstract: What if you could deploy a full cloud development platform on a single physical machine with one command? This talk introduces The Box, an open-source NixOS appliance that packages Coder, k3s, and Terraform into a self-contained system you can boot from a USB stick or disk image. Adèle Devantoy walks through how NixOS flakes, disko, and nixos-facter replace traditional provisioning scripts, how the appliance bootstraps its own Coder server and workspace templates on first boot, and why reproducible infrastructure matters for workshops, demos, and home labs. Expect a live demo, real hardware, and practical lessons from building production-grade NixOS images in CI.
