Manhunter (1986)
Details
Michael Mann's Manhunter is technically a prequel to Silence of the Lambs (it was remade as the vastly inferior Red Dragon), where FBI agent and master criminal profiler Will Graham is tasked with catching The Tooth Fairy, a gruesome serial killer targeting families during the full moon. But Graham is meant to be recovering after the traumatic ordeal of recently catching Hannibal Lecter and remains psychologically fragile. And he's up against the clock.
Anyway, this is legitimately in my all-time top five movies. Oh, you need more? The casting is superb, with William Petersen, fresh from To Live and Die in LA, playing Graham perfectly as a damaged individual battling against the odds. Brian Cox's Lecter is far more down to earth than Hopkins' and he almost steals the film in his brief screentime. But what really makes this stand out is Dante Spinotti's stunning cinematography and the fantastic score. Synthesisers, neon and designer stubble baby, this is the 80's in excelsis and it is magisterial.
