It wasn't his debut but Thief was the first archetypal Michael Mann film, mixing streetlit urban noir into a cops and robbers movie about a skilled man with a code, trying to navigate an increasingly complex professional life and a suddenly promising personal one. Brilliantly filmed in a night-blue tint, with a primo Tangerine Dream synth soundtrack, this boasts one of James Caan's best performances in the lead, on the top of a cast that includes Tuesday Weld, James Belushi, Willie Nelson(!) and Mann mainstay Dennis Farina.

Caan plays Frank, an elite safecracker who earns a good living but is getting tired of living from score to score with jail time in between. His girlfriend Jessie could be a part of a new life, especially if he can pull down one big last score. But the heat is beginning to come down from multiple directions, as corrupt cops want their share and a high-level local crime figure decides Frank would be better off as an employee than a freelancer.
