The Lady Eve (1941) - YouTube

Barbara Stanwyck was on a bit of a heater in 1941. She starred alongside Gary Cooper - who was about to win an Oscar - in Frank Capra's celebrated Meet John Doe and romcom classic Ball of Fire, and with Henry Fonda in the Dalton Trumble-written You Belong to Me and this, the pick of the bunch. Writer/director Preston Sturges (on his own hot streak at this time) created an absolute delight of a film around two sparkling leads who had chemistry and the ability to draw the best out of a really funny script.

Stanwyck is Jean Harrington, a quick-witted con artist used to taking suckers on cruise ships with her equally sharp and amoral father. When they meet wealthy and naive heir Charles Pike (Fonda), just back from a trip researching snakes in the Amazon, they reckon they've hit the jackpot. But then, wouldn't you know it, Jean begins to get feelings for the schmuck! She just needs to pry him away from his bodyguard, Muggsy.
