About us

From the late 1980s through the 1990s, Manga Video
changed how the West discovered anime. Emerging from Island Records’ film arm
in the UK, the bold black-and-red Manga Video label introduced VHS audiences to
groundbreaking Japanese animation films that were darker, louder, more
philosophical, and unlike anything else available at the time.
Titles like Akira and Ghost in the Shell didn’t just become cult classics; they reshaped
global animation, cinema, and pop culture. Although the Manga Video label was
eventually phased out during the transition from VHS to DVD continuing under Manga Entertainment its influence
remains massive. This screening series celebrates that legacy and the films that inspired a whole generation.
