# Lake District Adventure Weekend: Buttermere, Haystacks & Mountain Camping

Join us for a 3-day adventure exploring one of the most beautiful and dramatic parts of the Lake District.
This is a weekend for people who enjoy mountains, hiking, nature, photography, and escaping the city for an unforgettable outdoor experience.
We will explore the quieter western side of the Lake District, hiking through the stunning Buttermere Valley, climbing the iconic Haystacks fell, and spending an evening surrounded by mountains during a high-level wild camping experience (weather and conditions permitting).

# Day 1: Travel to Lake District + Buttermere Valley + Haystacks Hike

## 9:00 AM — Depart London

We will leave London in the morning and travel towards the beautiful western Lake District.
The journey will take us away from the busy tourist areas and towards the more dramatic mountain landscapes around Buttermere.
After arriving, we will have some time to settle in, grab food, and prepare for our first hike.

## Afternoon Hike: Haystacks Fell

Route:
Gatesgarth Farm → Scarth Gap → Haystacks Summit → Blackbeck Tarn → Return
Distance: Approximately 8–10 km
Elevation gain: Around 600 m
Duration: 3-3.5 hours hours
Haystacks is one of the most beautiful fells in the Lake District, offering a perfect introduction to the area.
The route takes us through:

• Rocky mountain paths
• Beautiful tarns
• Dramatic ridgelines
• Incredible views over Buttermere and surrounding valleys

After the hike, we return to the campsite, cook dinner, relax, and get to know everyone.
Night 1: Campsite near Buttermere

# Day 2: Mountain Backpacking + Wild Camping Adventure

After breakfast, we pack our backpacks and head into the higher fells.
This will be the highlight of the weekend.

## Route:

Buttermere
→ Honister Pass
→ Grey Knotts
→ Brandreth
→ Great Gable area
→ Styhead Tarn
Distance: Approximately 12–15 km
Elevation gain: Around 900 m
Duration: 6–8 hours including breaks
We will spend the day exploring some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the Lake District.
Along the way there will be opportunities for:

• Photography stops
• Scenic breaks
• Wildlife spotting
• Enjoying the mountains away from the crowds

In the evening, we will set up our wild camp (following Leave No Trace principles and respecting the environment).
If weather conditions allow, we will enjoy:

# Day 3: Sunrise + Mountain Descent + Return to London

We will wake up early to enjoy the quiet morning atmosphere in the mountains.
Depending on weather and group energy, we may explore viewpoints around the Great Gable area before descending back towards Buttermere.

## Return Route:

Great Gable area
→ Honister Pass
→ Buttermere
Distance: Approximately 10–12 km
After completing the hike, we will start our journey back to London.
Expected arrival:
Monday evening.

# Important Information

This is an outdoor adventure, not a guided tour.
Everyone is responsible for bringing suitable equipment and being prepared for changing mountain weather.
The wild camping section depends on:

• Weather conditions

• Local conditions

We will follow Leave No Trace principles:

• Take all rubbish with us
• Respect wildlife
• Avoid damaging vegetation
• Leave the mountains as we found them

The Lake District weather can change quickly, so flexibility and a positive attitude are important.

🏕️ Cairngorms Camping & Ben Macdui Adventure | 4 Days | Mid-September

Escape the city for four unforgettable days exploring the UK’s largest national park. We’ll spend the weekend camping beneath ancient Caledonian pine forests, hiking Scotland’s second-highest mountain, wandering around crystal-clear lochs, and enjoying some of the best wilderness the UK has to offer.

This trip is designed for people who enjoy the outdoors, want to meet fellow adventurers, and are happy with a moderately challenging hiking weekend. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or looking to gain more camping experience before bigger adventures, you’re very welcome to join.

📅 Trip Overview

Day 1 – Travel & Camp

• Morning travel from London
• Set up camp near Loch Morlich/Glenmore
• Easy lakeside walk around Loch Morlich
• Sunset by the beach and relaxed evening around camp

Day 2 – Ben Macdui Summit

• Full-day hike to Ben Macdui (1,309 m), the UK’s second-highest mountain
• Approximately 18–20 km
• 7–9 hours including breaks
• Stunning mountain views and a true Highland wilderness experience
• Dinner together in Aviemore (optional)

Day 3 – Forests & Lochs
A more relaxed day exploring some of the Cairngorms’ most beautiful locations:

• Loch an Eilein
• Rothiemurchus Estate
• Glenmore Forest

Optional activities include canoe hire, wildlife spotting, photography, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk through Scotland’s ancient pine forests.

Day 4 – Scenic Drive & Return
Before heading home we’ll enjoy a scenic drive through the eastern Cairngorms with stops for coffee and viewpoints before travelling back.

⛺ Camping

We’ll stay at a proper campsite with facilities including toilets and showers, making this a comfortable introduction to multi-day camping. Camping fees are paid individually.

🥾 Fitness Level

Moderate.

The Ben Macdui day is a full mountain hike requiring good fitness. You don’t need to be an expert mountaineer, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours over uneven terrain.

🚗 Transport

We’ll coordinate transport closer to the trip. If enough people join, we can arrange shared car hire from London or Scotland to keep costs down.

💰 Estimated Cost

• Campsites: £20–£30 per night
• Shared transport: depends on final group size
• Food: bring your own camping meals or join the group for dinner in Aviemore
• Any optional activities (bike hire, canoeing, etc.) are extra
