As we enter the Advent Season, we thought it might be timely and interesting to read a work on the Infancy Narratives found in Matthew and Luke. So, we will read Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives by Pope Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger 1927-2022).

If you want to go into greater depth, then Raymond E. Brown's The Birth of the Messiah is a seminal work. I feel that Pope Benedict's work is better suited to our format as he engages more directly with the theological implications of these passages of Scripture.

You can find the "Infancy Narratives" in the opening chapters of the gospels of Matthew and Luke which you can access in a variety of translations on Biblegateway
