This moderately classic French film features legendary Italian actress Claudia Cardinale at perhaps her most beautiful.

In the 18th century, a young and skilled thief, Dominique (Jean-Paul Belmondo) is outraged by the tyranny of Malichot, the gang leader and defies his authority. He saves his life by enlisting in the army under the name Cartouche, where he befriends La Taupe and La Douceur. But the perils of military glory don’t suit the trio, who desert after stealing the regiment’s pay. Fleeing, they seek refuge at an inn where they meet Venus (Claudia Cardinale), a beautiful gypsy who has been taken prisoner. Dominique rescues her and she joins his gang. Returning to Malichot’s hideout, Dominique distributes his loot to the gang, who immediately accepts him as their leader.
