Talk: 'Delivering Data Platforms' by Gavin Campbell

In recent years, we have learned a great deal about delivering application code and infrastructure as code. However, delivering those aspects of our products that relate to data and databases has often turned out to be a slightly more complicated problem. This talk will attempt to address a few common questions that arise in data platform delivery, such as:

  • Who is responsible for the database anyway? And what about the data in the database?

  • Are databases applications or infrastructure?

  • What about "NoSQL" databases?

  • Has "the cloud" solved all of these problems?

  • What about testing?

We'll try to steer clear of too much product-specific detail, whilst attempting to strike a balance between the latest buzzword technologies and the relational databases we all have buried at the back of the data centre.

Gavin is a consultant currently working to improve delivery practices in Data Engineering teams.
