What Just Happened? Surprises From Our Platform Engineering Research - Steve Fenton
With an idea formed in the CNCF Platform Engineering Community Group, we went out to investigate adoption, measurement, and success of real-world platform initiatives. The reality didn't match our expectations at all! Find out the real motivation behind platforms, the unexpected adoption strategies, and a series of disconnects that are making a mess of the whole thing.
Steve Fenton researches the socio-technical systems behind software delivery; how organizations, people, and technology actually work together (or don't). At Octopus Deploy, he explores GitOps, Platform Engineering, Continuous Delivery, and compliance through a lens shaped by punk history, psychology, and the kind of genre fiction that asks uncomfortable questions about systems and society.
Testing Terraform Modules: Challenges and Practical Approaches using CI/CD and Ephemeral Environments - Hakoub Esfahani
Terraform modules are the backbone of modern infrastructure, but unit testing remains a challenge. Many SREs and Platform Engineers lack proficiency in programming languages, making tools like Terratest or Kitchen-Terraform inaccessible. Mocking data or APIs often leads to failed deployments, while deploying real resources in the cloud adds complexity and cost. In this talk, Hakoub will present approaches and demos to address unit testing for IaC - starting with why unit testing matters, and covering tools like “terraform test” and custom CI/CD design to deploy and destroy ephemeral environments.
Hakoub Esfahani is the DevOps Manager and Product Security lead for Arctera Insight Capture, where he leads CI/CD, Cloud infrastructure, Cloud Security and Product Security efforts.
He started his career in 2017 by working with clients on technical problems in complex enterprise environments, giving him the opportunity to firsthand understand both the functional and security requirements of the field. In 2019, he started to shift his focus to DevOps, architecture, and cloud technologies, eventually creating the first DevOps team at the company.
