Exeter, Dartmoor & South West Coast – Summer Bank Holiday Weekend

A Summer Bank holiday extravaganza exploring the the south west coast path and Dartmoor from the city of Exeter.

Friday 23rd August. Short evening guided city walk (details to come). Start time approx 6pm for an hour or two.

Saturday 24th August. 12miles/19km approx (circular).
A varied hike exploring Dartmoor from Okehampton across a number of moorland hills to High Willhays, the highest point on Dartmoor followed by a final wooded river section along the Tarka Trail. Train from Exeter to Okehampton at 9.34am gets to Okehampton at 10.15am (£8.40 return).

Sunday 25th August. 12miles/19km approx (circular).
A chance to explore the south west coast path along Babbacombe Bay on a circular walk starting with a ferry from Teignmouth. Teignmouth is 20mins from Exeter by train (£6.10 return). There may be a chance to swim and explore the beaches during the breaks. The Teignmouth = Shaldon Ferry is Englands oldest passenger ferry (£2 ferry charge).

Monday 26th August – 11miles/17km approx. (linear) A linear hike from Exeter to Dawlish Warren. There may be a chance to swim and explore the beaches during the breaks. Retrun by train to Exeter.

Rough itinerary, may be changed nearer time with regards public transport changes or weather conditions.

The hikes are based from Exeter and using public transport, Exeter will be the base for the group. Accomodation is either B&B, hotels, hostel or camp sites close to Exeter.

Hike Cost/Meetup/organizer: £42 (organizer hike fees) by bank transfer (please contact the organizer) spaces will be limited. Transport and accommodation is up for everyone to arrange themselves. There is a train service from Exeter.

HIKES FOR THIS WEEKEND MAY BE DEMANDING WITH UNDULATING ROUGH TERRAIN.

A watsapp group will be set up closer to the day to arrange evenings out in the city after hikes and to confirm logistics.

Walking Safety

Walking is a great way to keep fit & generally very safe; however it does contain an element of risk. Before going on any of these walks you need to be reasonably fit and be prepared to be responsible for your own safety. You should wear appropriate clothing such as proper walking shoes, warm & wet weather clothing and carry sufficient food and water.
