ABOUT THIS COLLECTION- words by the designer Finn Barker-Flower
The garments provided span my education as a designer, from some of my first looks on foundation to the white show at CSM. I often look to non-traditional, non-fashion influences for my work, focusing on performance and spectacle and taking inspiration from topics such as Wes Anderson films, the 7 deadly sins and children’s drawings. I focus on silhouette and form whilst trying to create looks that are as seamless as possible.
I’ve always been interested in using unusual materials in my work to create exciting forms, from beach balls to pipe insultation. This is a key component on my design process when creating large-scale, ‘gravity defying’ work. I then work with fabric, to cover, drape and cut garments. I enjoy working in 3D combined with flat pattern cutting most and because of this my work often focuses on repeating shapes to cover the body and create volume in new ways.
ABOUT OUR DESIGNER
At school I enjoyed studying maths and fine art the most and was ready to study maths full time at university before Covid caused a last-minute change onto a foundation course, specialising in fashion design. From there I tried a few different courses before finding myself at Central Saint Martin’s where I now study on my first year of Womenswear design. There is still a strong mathematical influence on my design process, and I love how I’m able to combine this with my work. This process is combined with 3D experimentation and usual materials to create my looks.
Although my work is often inspired by non-fashion topics, I often find myself in awe of Noir Kei Ninomiya’s silhouettes and outstanding use of material, as well as Bad Binch Tontong’s breath-taking forms and sculpture-like garments. I’m very excited to see where my studies at university take me and aspire to create my own label, with garments that defy expectation and shock audiences.
