When abundance becomes undertow
Details
Can optimisation replace politics?
Can trillionaire tech charity replace tax justice?
Can public harm be solved by private grace?
Does the suggestion to build companies to take advantage of technologies of abundance embody a deep paradox?
Can philanthropy bridge the needs of those left behind, not only in wealthy countries like the USA, but also in less developed countries?
If productivity gains accrue mainly to already dominant economies, while employment shocks and institutional stress spread more widely, increasing resentment, what kind of future will that be?
These are some of the questions raised in the recent article When Abundance Becomes Undertow written by Paul Epping.
Paul has kindly agreed to join this online London Futurists Swarm conversation, to present some of the key ideas from his recent articles, and to respond to questions and comments.
This Swarm conversation will be held inside a special Zoom Meeting room. As an experiment, no advance registration is required, but you will arrive in a Waiting Room until a co-host admits you. By default, please keep your mics muted. You will be welcome to turn on your cameras, and to exchange comments (respectfully, please) in the Chat window.
