Humane Nature of Technology Meetup
Welcome back for another GFT London Meetup. We have decided to kick-off our 2020 programme with a core topic within tech - The humane nature of technology.
This meetup seeks to explore what we mean when we use the phrase ‘humane nature of technology’. This phrase is widely used within a myriad of contexts: one being technology that is intuitive, another that it is accessible, and again whether it is ‘ethical.’
All of these are true, but at the heart belies the question of ‘does this ‘thing’ work for people?’ If it does, who exactly is it designed for, whom does it it benefit and who is the creator? In fact, what trade-offs are necessary for a product to benefit people (i.e. data and whether the potential benefits of an item are worth the imposition on people)? All of this, however, is dependent on how the ‘thing’ benefits people and to what extent. These questions of ‘how’ and ‘to what extent’ is where this topic has originated from – especially in terms of social media where some aspects of a platform are no longer serving those for whom it was created for.
All of this will be discussed and more!
Speaking from GFT is Lead UX Designer, Mark Grady. Mark supports a team of UX and UI designers who create business tools for our clients that go beyond doing just their job and help to make the users more efficient, effective and (wherever possible) happier in the work they do.
With nearly a decade and a half in UX, and even longer in delivering web and app experiences, Mark has been involved in helping users achieve their goals for a range of well-known brands across a range of sectors, both consumer and business facing, including HSBC, Virgin Atlantic, GSK, Huawei and Premier Inn to name drop a few.
His talk will cover the following topics:
• What is Humane Technology?
• Inhumane technology
• Why humane matters
• Whose technology is humane?
• Selling humane
• Humane UX and product design
• Making your tech humane
Also speaking will be Robyn Thomas, GFT’s Community Specialist who aims to broaden the topic by exposing the current problems within the tech industry that make it seem inhumane.
Both speakers have a background in history and have thoroughly researched what can be done to make technology itself humane.
This meetup will be hosted online and we want to make the session as interactive as possible so please send us questions in advance for the discussion!
