Beauty Ideals and Female Chinese International Students on Dating Apps

What happens when Chinese female international students move between two beauty systems — from the East Asian ideal of “白幼瘦” (pale, young, thin) to Western ideals centred on curves, confidence, and “natural” sexiness?

Does adapting to Western beauty standards bring freedom — or simply a different kind of pressure?

Join us for a live online conversation with Dr Tong Meng (Durham University), whose research explores dating apps, racialised desirability, body image, and the experiences of Chinese women studying in the UK.

We’ll discuss:
• Beauty standards across cultures
• Race, attraction, and dating apps
• The pressure of never feeling “enough”
• Fetishisation and Asian female stereotypes
• And the experiences of Chinese women in UK academia
