Details

It's time for the inaugural gathering of the London In-Memory Computing Meetup!

We'll be meeting February 7 at 6:30 p.m. at Bloomsbury House: 74-77 Great Russell St, Bloomsbury, London WC1B 3DA. This free event includes food, beverages (and of course free wi-fi)! Thank you to GridGain Systems for sponsoring it. It will be a fantastic evening of discussions around distributed computing. We'll also have some cool raffle prizes.

Agenda:
• 6:30 -- food, drinks, networking
• 7 p.m. -- Talk 1: "Building consistent and highly available distributed systems with Apache Ignite and GridGain" with GridGain technology evangelist Akmal Chaudhri
• 7:40 p.m. -- Talk 2: "Oracle TimesTen Velocity Scale Database: Next Generation Distributed Relational IMDB" with Chris Jenkins, Senior Director, In-Memory Technology at Oracle.
• 8:30 p.m. -- Raffle drawings

  • 8-9 p.m. Mixer

Talk 1 -- Summary: It is well known that there is a tradeoff between data consistency and high availability. However, there are many applications that require very strong consistency guarantees. Making such applications highly available can be a significant challenge. Akmal will explain how to overcome these challenges. Specific guidelines will be presented on how to build such systems covering topics including:

• In-memory backups
• Data persistence
• Data center replication
• Full and incremental snapshots.

Akmal will use the open-source Apache® Ignite™ (https://ignite.apache.org) as well as GridGain (https://www.gridgain.com/products/gridgain-products), which was built upon Apache Ignite, during his talk. What is Apache Ignite? It's a memory-centric distributed database, caching, and processing platform for transactional, analytical, and streaming workloads, delivering in-memory speeds at petabyte scale. Ignite is Used by ING, Sberbank, HomeAway, Wellington, FSB, The Glue, 24 Hour Fitness, JacTravel and many more.

At the end of this talk, you'll have better understanding of how Apache Ignite and GridGain work, and how to use different features of these products to build applications that are both consistent and highly available. (Connect with Akmal on Twitter @akmalchaudhri (https://twitter.com/akmalchaudhri)).

Talk 2: Summary: In this talk, Chris will give an overview of Oracle's new, next generation distributed IMDB. Built on the solid foundations of Oracle TimesTen (the world's first commercial relational IMDB) Velocity Scale Database brings a new level of capability to the TimesTen product family. Chris will cover the key features and functionality of Velocity Scale and also highlight its ability to deliver extreme performance and scalability.
