## Chips in the Stone

A quiet morning of bird listening in Brompton Cemetery

“When the soul is still, even the smallest song can be heard.”

Join me for a slow, peaceful morning in Brompton Cemetery, listening for the gentle chips, chirps, and rustlings of the birds who make their homes among the gravestones and angels.
This is a soft, no-pressure gathering for introverts and quiet souls — part birdwatch, part meditative wander, part silent appreciation of one of London’s most atmospheric Victorian cemeteries.
I'll be using the Merlin Bird ID app (free, optional) to help identify birds by sound — robins, wrens, blackbirds, magpies, and perhaps a green woodpecker or even a carrion crow.

🪦 A Note on Place
Victorian cemeteries like Brompton were built not as grim spaces of mourning, but as public pleasure gardens — places to walk, reflect, and enjoy the living world among the monuments. Over time, many became overgrown and misunderstood, their quietness mistaken for something sinister thanks to horror films and folklore.
But the only thing creeping around here are the treecreepers — tiny, harmless birds who spiral gently up tree trunks and mind their own business.

  • Meeting point: Just inside the North Lodge Gate, Brompton Cemetery
  • Nearest Tube: West Brompton or Earl’s Court
  • Ends: Around noon. Join me for a spot of lunch nearby and see where the day takes us.
  • Max group size: 20 people — please RSVP only if you're sure you can come. Small numbers will ensure we don't freak the wildlife. (If this proves popular I will reschedule the event)

### What to Expect

A gentle welcome and short grounding
Unstructured bird listening using the Merlin app, your eyes, or your ears
A quiet wander among awesome gothic tombs and angels
Optional moment of stillness or journaling
No pressure to talk — relaxed, silence and stillness are welcome

### What to Bring (and What Not to)

Binoculars (optional)
Headphones (if using the Merlin app)
Thermos, sketchbook, or journal (optional)
Something to sit on if preferred
Clothing in muted colours – browns, greys, greens, black
🟥 Please avoid wearing red — it startles birds and ruins the vibe
oh and leave your trumpets, airhorns and scarecrows at home :D

This is a walk for those who listen more than they speak
For those who find solace in stone and song
For those who know that beauty doesn’t have to shout
