Ryuichi Sakamoto| Opus is here! As part of the BFI London Film Festival, we'll get to see the final performance by the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, the legendary composer. Sakamonoto passed away in March this year after struggling against tonsil and rectal cancer for several years. The monumental event was filmed and produced into the 103-minute film.

It is a remarkable achievement for Sakamoto, who stopped performing years earlier after his diagnosis. Realising his days were numbered, he decided to put together this event in late 2022, looking back at his entire career. The twenty pieces performed in the film can be viewed as his somatou or life review, an instantaneous and rapid manifestation of autobiographical memory as his life was nearing the end. The film covers pieces from his popstar Yellow Magic Orchestra period to his final album, 12. Directed by his filmmaker son, this "intimate" piece of work is a "true celebration of his life" (LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA).

I have been very fortunate to have been to his performances several times in London, but if you haven't, this is a chance to experience his genius.

Tickets go on sale at 10: 00 A.M. on Tuesday 12 September for non-BFI members (the 6th for members).

The screenings take place here:
Friday 13 October 2023 21:00
Curzon Mayfair, Screen 1
Sunday 15 October 2023 15:50
Curzon Soho Cinema, Screen 1

After the screening, we will meet by the entrance on the ground floor (to help those who aren't catching the film tomorrow). I will be carrying a emerald blue Dakine rucksack - there should be others with me. We are meeting on Sunday, but you are welcome to catch the film on Friday the 13th if you prefer and join us just for the discussion and socialising. If you didn't manage to buy a ticket, you're also welcome to join us for the chat.

I look forward to meeting/seeing you then!
