The Craft of Carpentry: Exhibition and Documentary Screening

We will combine a visit to the Craft of Carpentry exhibition with the screening of the documentary Kigumi House: Akinori Abo Building Houses.

Japanese carpentry, often referred to as kigumi or daiku, is an extraordinary craft steeped in tradition and artistry. Renowned for its meticulous precision, this woodworking technique brings together the beauty of natural materials with the sophistication of intricate joinery.

Akinori Abo is a highly respected master carpenter from Japan, known for his incredible talent in traditional Japanese wood joinery. What sets him apart is his ability to create incredibly thin wood shavings with a plane. He won a competition in 1998 by producing shavings that were just 3 microns thick—can you believe that's only 3% of the width of a human hair? Isn’t that impressive?
