Craig Aspinall - Product Engineer at PortSwigger - 'How Not to Get Hacked by Job Applicants'

When your hiring process involves running code from strangers, things can get interesting fast. At PortSwigger, we ask candidates to build apps as part of our technical assessment — which means we’re effectively executing untrusted code from the internet. I’ll share how we use devcontainers to sandbox and safely evaluate those submissions, and how that same approach might finally kill off the “it works on my machine” excuse for good.

Behind every shiny AI demo is a stack of logic, context management, and tool calling. But how much of that can we build ourselves before it gets messy? I’ll wire up a minimal agent implementation to demonstrate the core patterns—the "magic"—that drive autonomous behavior. We will then compare this experimental approach against established frameworks to see what complexity they abstract away.
