MEET: Starbuck's, 38 Walbrook, London EC4N 8BN 10.45 for tea
or just outside at 11.15 for the start of the walk.
This walk will trace how the City of London became the great financial power. From Thomas Cromwell's ending of the feudal system and Thomas Gresham's building of the Royal Exchange in the 16th century to the coffee houses of Stuart Times and the end of the livery companies' stranglehold on the the economy.
We'll take in the disastrous fall of the South Sea company with its ramifications for all levels of society. Other great organisations too: the Bank of England, really formed by accident and demolished on purpose, the East India Company apparently unassailable, but brought down too.
All this and why Cromwell let the Jews back in and did P and O really invent the word Posh?
Please pay £12 either cash on the day or to my account 75471778 sort code 090128.
If you see unpaid by your name just ignore it. That's Meet up!
