Join Tim on his third walk down London's hidden rivers. This is a brand new walk where we will trace the Tyburn from Baker Street to the Thames at Pimlico. The river has already had an eventful life, flowing down from Hampstead, feeding the lake in Regents Park and crossing over the Circle Line at Baker Street Station before we pick it up.
Tyburn can be translated as 'two streams' and it drained much of the land that became the West End. Indeed the whole area was called at one time, Tyburnia. But the name had unfortunate connotations. For centuries, London's criminals were 'turned off' at the Tyburn Tree at what is now Marble Arch. As the West End developed, Tyburn Lane became Oxford Street and the name, like the river, disappeared..

We'll trace the Tyburn's ghostly course through Marylebone, Mayfair, Buckingham Palace and Pimlico before it flows into the Thames. Almost all of it is hidden now beneatch four centuries of buildings but every so often you can see the characteristic dip of the river valley beneath our feet and occasionaly you can even glimpse it through the drains.

We meet at 10.45 for an 11 am start at the marvelous Metropolitan Bar, once the great dining room for the Metropolitan Line Hotel which is now a Wetherspoons serving breakfast. It's attached to Baker Street Station and is just opposite the Sherlock Holmes statue
The charge is £12; payable on the day in cash or by credit or debit card. You can also use PayPal or bank transfer.
