A walk round the Gherkin - London, from Londinium to the 21st century
Details
Join Tim for an in-depth exploration of the City all around one of its iconic buildings - the Gherkin
In this new tour we will never be more than a few hundred metres from the gherkin yet we will be walking through 2000 years of history.
We start at the gherkin itself, a potent symbol of the regeneration of the City. But we will also see precious fragments of Roman and medieval London that were spared the destruction of the great fire. We’ll see medieval churches which were the centres of civic power for 500 years and one where shakespeare worshipped. Most of the time, however, we will be walking through 21st Century London: the towering temples to Mammon that have transformed the City over the last few decades. Amidst all the skyscrapers there are reminders of the past when the City was where ordinary people lived, worked, worshipped and died.
We meet at Notes coffee shop which is actually in the gherkin from 11 am to start our walk at 11.15 am.
