Tim's Walks - the Bermondsey Revolution: the story of Ada and Alfred Salter
Details
Join Tim for a walk through historic Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. We'll walk in the footsteps of a remarkable couple, Ada and Alfred Salter, who helped transform Bermondsey and paved the way for many of the reforms of the 20th Century.
Ada was the first woman mayor in London and launched the 'Bermondsey Revolution' which concentrated on bringing decent housing into one of the worst slum areas in London. Alfred was a brilliant doctor who devoted his life to the poor, became their MP and helped set up the beginnings of a free health service. Between them they revolutionised the way people looked at improving the conditions of the poor especially in housing and health.
We will walk through Bemondsey seeing the remnants of the great factories which once dominated the area especially food and leather production. We'll see where the Salters worked and lived, the charitable foundations tht helped the poor and the monuments to their work.
It's also a beautiful riverside walk with great views and we end in what is surely the greatest pub in London!
The walk costs £12payable in cash on the day, by card or through PayPal or bank transfer. Phone number is 07846 899I56.
